Translation

Leandro Greco ran. His breath formed small white clouds in the damp night. He had spent all night on his law books, with a now-cold cup of coffee and a picture of Vida. The girl's image was between the pages, like an important bookmark he did not want to lose. When he finally left the library, it was already two in the morning. Suddenly, a heavy rain began, which seemed to want to hit only him. He arrived at the stop just as he saw the red lights of the last bus moving away. The vehicle moved along the road, raising two sprays of water on either side of the wheels.

Translation

For a long minute he stood still under the time panel. His old jeans were stuck to his legs, and his waterproof jacket no longer protected him. In the past few months, he had missed too many things to worry about a bus anymore. Still, he felt something inside him give way, like a thread pulled too long. He thought of his home, those six miles of empty road, his now wet shoes, and the cold bed where Vida's side was still, stubbornly.

Translation

That's when he saw her: a warm, yellow light coming out of the rain at the street corner. Leandro narrowed his eyes. He was pretty sure he had passed by there hundreds of times, but that storefront had never been there before. A painted wooden sign swung a little above the door: The Lantern Under the Rain. He asked no further questions. He pulled his hood over his head and ran toward that light, as a man lost at sea runs toward the shore.

Translation

The door opened making a soft ringing sound. The silence inside enveloped him like a dry, warm blanket. Leandro shook off the water slowly, almost embarrassed to soil that dark, polished wooden floor. The room was small, lit by yellow paper lamps. There was a good smell of warm bread, of broth, of something that reminded him of his grandmother's kitchen when he was a child. An older lady in a white apron beckoned him toward a corner table without saying a word, without even smiling. Just a kind gesture, as if she had been waiting for him for a long time.

Cominciò a mangiare lentamente.

Translation

He sat down, and a steaming bowl of barley soup and a plate of fresh bread appeared before him. He did not remember ordering. He began to eat slowly. The soup was so good that it almost hurt, a taste that mixed warmth and sadness. But no matter how much he ate, the level in the bowl never seemed to decrease, as if the spoon was filling the void instead of emptying it.

Translation

He looked up and looked at the other customers. There were about ten people, sitting at tables. Each had a steaming plate in front of them and an empty chair in front of them. An older gentleman with a crooked tie looked blankly at the door. A girl with gray hair before time held her hands together on her napkin, waiting in silence. No one was talking. No one was finishing eating. There was such a stillness in that room that Leandro noticed, with a little shudder, that he had not yet heard the ticking of the clock hanging on the wall. The hands, he realized, were not moving at all. Time, in there, seemed to stand still.

«Leandro

Translation

"Leandro."

Translation

The voice came like a song he had not heard in years, and his heart recognized the name even before his brain did. He raised his head. Vida was there, sitting across from him in the white summer dress with tiny blue flowers she had worn that afternoon at the beach two summers before. Her brown hair was swaying over her shoulders as if a light breeze swept through the room, even though the air was still and motionless. Her green eyes were the same: clear, curious, full of him, full of the love that should never have ended.

Translation

Leandro could not speak. He put down the spoon, and his hand trembled so much that the metal rang against the ceramic of the plate. Vida stretched his fingers across the table, not until they touched it completely, and smiled that smile that had always had the power to melt the tension from his shoulders, a smile capable of healing any wound.

«Ti ricordi quella sera a Portovenere disse piano. Resta. Finisci di mangiare con calma. Qui non c'è fretta, amore mio. Qui non c'è mai fretta. Qui possiamo stare insieme per sempre

Translation

"Do you remember that night in Portovenere?" he said softly. "The pistachio ice cream, and you saying you would be with me until the end of the world." She laughed, a low, soft laugh, a sound Leandro had thought he would never hear again. "That's a good end of the world, isn't it? Stay. Finish eating slowly. There is no hurry here, my love. Here there is never a hurry. Here we can be together forever."

Translation

Leandro felt tears suddenly rise. Outside, the rain was still beating against the glass, but more softly now, almost a distant murmur. Inside, something very tired was giving up: the urge to stop struggling with exams, the empty mornings, the shopping to do alone, the phone that no longer rang with his number. Here was Vida. Here was warm bread and its soothing scent. Here there was no need to move on. It was enough to stay. He closed his eyes and for a moment-an instant as long as a whole possible life-he already felt himself sitting at that table forever, free of the weight of a world that kept turning without her.

Translation

Then, suddenly, the sound of rain ceased completely.

Translation

Leandro opened his eyes again. Through the window he saw that the sky was changing color: a light blue, smudged with pink, was beginning to push away the blackness of the night. Dawn was coming. Somewhere in the distant city, a shutter was raised with a clatter, a dog barked, a moped drove off. They were small, common sounds, the sounds of life beginning again, and they seemed miraculous to him.

Resta, Leandro. Ancora un cucchiaio. Ancora uno, e poi un altro ancora.

Translation

He noticed that the plate in front of him was still half full. He could have remained half-full forever if he had wanted to. He looked at Vida, and Vida had not changed: she was bright, patient, eternal. She gave him a slight nod toward the bowl, a very sweet invitation. Stay, Leandro. One more spoonful. One more, and then one more.

Translation

Leandro thought of his mother, who used to make him coffee on Sundays without asking for anything more, just her presence. He thought of the notes left open on his desk, the weight of the civil procedure exam in eight days. He thought of the empty side of the bed that, perhaps, one day very far away would stop being Vida's side and become just an empty side, and then, perhaps, something else, a new future. He thought that staying there meant keeping her captive with him in memory, keeping her from being a sweet past. He thought that leaving meant really taking her, his memory, into the future that she would not experience.

«Io ti amo. Io ti amerò sempre con tutto me stesso. Ma non qui

Translation

"Vida," he whispered, and his voice came out broken with tears. "I love you. I will always love you with all my being. But not here."

Translation

Her eyes filled-not with sorrow or sadness, but with a kind of ancient understanding, as if deep down she had always known, as if she was there to help him understand. He nodded slowly, a slight movement of his head. Leandro reached out his hand and, with a firm but painful gesture, pushed the plate away. The pottery crawled on the wood with a small and final sound, a farewell. He stood up. His legs were shaking. He took a step, two, three toward the door. He did not turn around, for he knew that if he turned around he would never leave that enchanted place again. He rested his hand on the brass handle, pulled. A breath of cold, clean air hit his face, a scent of ozone and new day. He crossed the threshold.

Translation

Behind him, the doorbell did not ring. He turned only then: instead of a storefront, there was a gray, ruined concrete wall with a torn poster of an old concert. The Lantern in the Rain had never been there, or was no longer there, which, he realized, was the same thing. He had made his choice.

Translation

Leandro stood still on the dry sidewalk for a full minute, and let the dawn wash his face with its clear, cold light. His clothes were still damp, but the cold was different now: it was the biting cold of the morning, not that of his heart in the night. He started walking home, unhurriedly, his hands in his pockets, one step after another.

Translation

The city was waking up around him. A baker raised the shutter of a bakery, and the smell of freshly baked bread came to him, so similar and so different from that of the restaurant. A sparrow perched on a puddle and drank the rainwater. Leandro felt the pain for Vida still intact, strong as an open wound, but no longer hungry, no longer devouring him: now she walked beside him, not inside him, a part of his story, not his whole identity.

Translation

He thought he would carry Vida like this from now on: in the warm mornings, in the difficult exams, in the pistachio ice creams he might one day eat with someone else without feeling like a traitor. He wiped his face with the wet sleeve of his jacket, and smiled for the first time in months-a small, crooked, but deeply earned smile. Then he hurried home, because he still had eight days to prepare civil procedure, and because, for the first time in a long time, the word still seemed to him not a condemnation, but a promise full of possibilities.
