Translation

Elia Moretti's workshop smelled of grease and rubber. And, above all, of silence. For Elia it was very important. With dirty hands, he would divide bolts from nuts and put them in small metal boxes: large ones on the right, small ones on the left, medium-sized ones in the middle. Each piece had to be in its place. When everything was sorted on the table, Elijah felt a little better. The weight in his stomach disappeared.

Translation

Behind his thick glasses, Elijah looked at an old woman's bicycle leaning against the wall. It had arrived the day before. A girl who had talked too much and very fast had brought it. Elijah had said "yes" with his head, without answering, as he always did. People scared him: their voices, their looks, their questions. Bicycles didn't. Bicycles were getting fixed in silence.

Translation

Elijah wiped his hands with a rag. He walked over to the bike. The frame was blue, a little old and weathered. The wicker basket in front was full of dust and dried leaves. Elijah sighed. First of all, he had to clean up.

Translation

With a small brush, Elijah removed the leaves one by one. Under the dust, he found something white: a small, carefully folded card. The paper was thick, beautiful, and the blue ink formed beautifully handwritten words.

"Grazie Carlo, per avermi aiutato quel giorno. Non lo dimenticherò mai."

Translation

"Thank you, Carlo, for helping me that day. I will never forget it."

Translation

Elijah read the note three times. Then he looked at the repair sheet: the bike belonged to Martina Alberghetti. Not Carlo's. The name on the sheet and the name on the ticket were not the same. Something inside him began to pound.

Translation

It was a mistake. A note in the wrong place. A "thank you" that had never reached the right person. Elijah felt his breath become short. He could not leave things like that. He had to fix them, like bolts in metal boxes. He put the note in his pocket. For the first time in many months, he closed the workshop before lunch.

Translation

The Borgo Square was full of light and noise. Elijah walked with his head down, pushing his bicycle. Each step was difficult, a struggle against the urge to turn back. He saw Martina sitting at a table, her black hair waved in the wind and wearing a flowered shirt. She recognized him and smiled at him.

La mia bici! Già pronta? Che gentile...

Translation

- My bike! Ready yet? How kind...

Translation

Elijah opened his mouth, but the words did not come out. Then he pulled the note out of his pocket and gave it to her, his hand trembling a little.

Era... era nel cestino. Non è per lei.

Translation

- It was -- it was in the basket. It was not for her.

Translation

Martina picked up the paper. As she read, her green eyes filled with tears. She looked around and suddenly raised her hand toward a stout man with a black beard crossing the square.

Carlo! Carlo, vieni qui!

Translation

- Carlo! Carlo, come here!

Translation

The man approached, confused. Then he read the note and his face changed: a big smile, excited. He hugged Martina tightly, laughing. Elijah took a step back, his cheeks red. He felt out of place, but he couldn't leave.

Translation

- You know, - said Martina, wiping her eyes, - I found another note, yesterday, in my bag. It's not mine. It has a name written on it: Giannino. Maybe - maybe she knows what to do with it?

Carlo conosceva Giannino Albiessini.

Translation

Carlo knew Giannino Albiessini. - You can always find him at the La Fontana Café at this time, - he said. Carlo offered to accompany Elia. They walked together in the sunshine. Carlo talked about an accident in the mountains, about a rope, about a hand that had pulled him up. Elijah listened without really understanding, but he nodded his head "yes." The others' words were strange: light and heavy at the same time.

Lesse, sorrise, poi guardò Elia negli occhi.

Translation

At the café, Giannino was sitting under a wisteria plant, with his straw hat and cane next to his chair. When Elijah handed him the note, the old man's wrinkled hands began to tremble. He read, smiled, then looked Elijah in the eye.

Translation

- Young man, you do not know what you have brought here today. This is a story from 20 years ago. Please sit down.

Elia non voleva sedersi. Voleva scappare. Nessuno sembrava volerlo mandare via.

Translation

Elijah did not want to sit down. He wanted to run away. But Carlo put a hand on his shoulder. Giannino ordered a coffee for Elia. Then the old man began to tell. The stories intermingled like bicycle chains: names, dates, small favors forgotten and now found again. Inside, Elijah felt anxiety rising, but there was also something else, something warm. For the first time, it was him at the center of a table. No one seemed to want to send him away.

Translation

He returned to the workshop at dusk, very tired. His heart was still pounding. He leaned against the work table and, out of habit, looked inside the basket of another forgotten bike in a corner: an old man's bike, with no name on the paper. At the bottom of the basket, among the dust, was another note.

Le mani gli divennero fredde. Lo aprì piano.

Translation

His hands became cold. He opened it slowly.

Translation

"For seeing what no one else sees."

Nessuna firma. Nessun nome. Elia lesse ancora, e ancora.

Translation

No signature. No name. Elijah read again, and again. For he saw. He saw. He, who found things in bicycles that others threw away. He, who had followed a forgotten note to a square and a café. The note was for him. Elijah suddenly realized this, and the certainty hit him hard. His legs gave out. He sat down on the oil-stained floor, clutching the paper.

Translation

At that moment, the bell above the workshop door rang. Elijah looked up and his heart stopped. They all entered together: Martina, with a bouquet of wildflowers; Carlo, with a bottle of wine; Giannino, slow, smiling, with his cane tapping softly on the floor. They filled the small workshop with colors, with voices, with scents that were not grease and rubber.

Tutti noi.

Translation

- Elijah, - Martina said, and her voice trembled with joy, - we have come to thank you. All of us.

Guardò i tre visi davanti a lui.

Translation

Elijah stood up, but his legs could not support him. He wanted to run to the back, lock himself in, disappear. The back door was three steps away. Three steps and he would be alone again, safe in his ordered silence. He looked at the doorknob. He looked at the three faces in front of him. Carlo's eyes were glazed over. Giannino held his straw hat against his chest, as if it were something important.

Io... cominciò Elia. La voce gli uscì rotta. Io non ho fatto niente. Ho solo... consegnato dei biglietti.

Translation

- I... - Elijah began. His voice came out broken. - I didn't do anything. I just ... delivered tickets.

No, disse Giannino, dolcemente. Lei ha visto. Gli altri sarebbero andati avanti. Lei no.

Translation

- No, - said Giannino, softly. - She saw. The others would have moved on. She didn't.

Translation

Elijah felt the unsigned note still clutched in his hand. Slowly, as if moving underwater, he opened his hand and placed it on the work table. He took a step forward, not backward. A small, trembling step. And then another.

Translation

Martina hugged him first. Elijah remained still, his arms along his sides, his hands still smeared with grease. He dared not touch that flowered shirt. But then Carlo held him tightly, and Giannino took his face in his wrinkled hands. Something inside Elijah broke without a sound. Tears flowed silently behind his thick glasses, wetting the grease on his cheeks.

Translation

They all stayed together for a long time, in that workshop that had never been so full. They promised to return: Martina for the bike, Carlo for coffee, Giannino just to say hello. The workshop would become a small port, they said, a place to stop. Elijah nodded his head "yes," for he could find no words.

Translation

By the time they left, the sun was low and red over the roofs of the village. Elijah stood in the doorway watching them as they walked away into the sunlit square. Inside, there was a new, strange, almost painful warmth. And along with the warmth, a small sadness: for all the years he had spent in silence, for the boy he had been, for the loneliness that was now, at last, leaving him, and that he, without meaning to, already regretted a little.

Rientrò in officina.

Translation

He returned to the workshop. He took the unsigned note and placed it, carefully, inside a metal box. Along with the small bolts. In their places.
