Translation

It was almost nine o'clock in the evening when Marco heard a knock. Three light, polite, almost timid knocks. For three months now, always at the same time, always the same discreet sound against the wood of the door.

Translation

Marco got up from the couch, groaning, his beard unshaven and his shirt stained. Ever since he'd lost his job at the factory, his evenings had all been the same: the television off, the refrigerator empty, and these strange visitors.

Translation

He opened the door with a brusque gesture. Standing in the doorway was a very elegant older man, dressed in an old-fashioned dark suit and a felt hat. He was smiling in a way that struck Marco as kind and, at the same time, a little unsettling.

Translation

"Good evening, Mr. Marco," said the old man, with an accent that sounded like something out of an old movie. "If you don't mind, could you give me a button from your shirt? Just one."

Translation

Marco stared at him. Then he looked at his own crumpled shirt, tugged on a button, and handed it to him without saying anything.

Translation

"Thank you very much," the man said, bowing gratefully. And he disappeared into the darkness of the corridor.

Translation

Marco closed the door and remained leaning against the wall. Every evening someone asked for something strange: a spoon, a handkerchief, an old key. Every evening he gave it, because it was easier than arguing. But that evening he began to think that the story couldn't be just a neighborhood prank.

Translation

The next morning, driven by a curiosity that was now keeping him awake at night, Marco went up to the attic. He hadn't been up there in years. The wooden ladder creaked under his feet, and dust clung to his throat.

Translation

Among boxes filled with her grandparents' belongings, she found a photo album. She opened it absentmindedly, leafing through yellowed pages. Then she stopped.

Translation

In a photo dated 1952, in a square he didn't recognize, there was an elegant man wearing a felt hat and a dark suit. He was smiling at the camera with the same smile as the visitor from the night before. It wasn't a look-alike relative: it was him.

Translation

Marco sat on the dusty floor for a long moment, the photo in his hand. His heart pounded. Then, slowly, his confused expression changed. His eyes lit up with a new, almost decisive thought.

Translation

If these visitors really did come from the past, then perhaps they could bring with them something more precious than a simple thank you.

Translation

That evening, Marco waited with sweaty hands. He had even cleaned his shirt. When he heard the usual three knocks, he opened the door immediately.

Era di nuovo l'uomo della fotografia. Marco lo riconobbe senza alcun dubbio.

Translation

It was the man in the photograph again. Marco recognized him without a doubt.

«Buonasera, signor Marco.

Translation

"Good evening, Mr. Marco. If you don't mind, could you give me a teaspoon?"

Marco prese fiato. «Certo» disse, cercando di sembrare calmo. «Però stavolta vorrei qualcosa in cambio. Una moneta d'oro antica

Translation

Marco took a breath. "Sure," he said, trying to sound calm. "But this time I'd like something in return. An ancient gold coin."

Translation

The visitor inclined his head slightly and smiled as if he'd always known this moment would come. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a shiny coin, which he placed in Marco's palm. Then he took the teaspoon, bowed, and disappeared.

Translation

The next morning, Marco ran downtown to the Collector, a man in his sixties with expensive glasses. The man examined the coin with a magnifying glass.

«Autentica. Rarissima» mormorò senza espressione. «Le offro tremila euro. In contanti

Translation

"Authentic. Extremely rare," he murmured blankly. "I'll offer you three thousand euros. In cash."

Translation

Marco left the shop with shaking hands. He walked like a drunk, unable to believe his luck. He had found his calling: those coins, those jewels, everything that visitors brought from the past was worth a fortune to modern collectors.

Translation

From that evening on, Marco began to negotiate. Each visitor received something, but in exchange he always asked for more valuable items. The years passed quickly.

Translation

Seven years later, Marco had become rich. Rich in a way he hadn't even dreamed of. His suburban house, still the same, was filled with banknotes piled in corners, expensive paintings leaning against the walls, gold watches in drawers that no longer closed.

Ma Marco, ormai, non era più Marco.

Translation

But Marco, by now, was no longer Marco.

Era mezzo calvo, perché aveva venduto i capelli.

Translation

He was half bald, having sold his hair. He had no teeth left, having traded them one at a time, in exchange for increasingly valuable coins. He had lost an ear, three toes on his left foot, and a piece of his tongue. He wore rags, because his fine clothes hung on him like oversized clothes.

Ogni sera, però, aspettava ancora. E ogni sera arrivava un visitatore.

Translation

But every evening he still waited. And every evening a visitor arrived.

Translation

That evening, the knocking at the door was the same as usual. Marco opened it with his usual toothless grimace. He was still standing in the doorway, the man from the 1952 photograph, looking exactly the same, while Marco had become unrecognizable.

Translation

The visitor held a huge diamond in his hand, so large it looked fake. It shone in the dim light like a tiny moon.

Translation

"Good evening, Mr. Marco," he said with his usual impeccable courtesy. "This is for you. In exchange, if you don't mind, may I have your right pinky?"

Translation

Marco looked at the diamond. Then he looked at his hand, the last nearly whole thing he had left. His pinky was small, almost useless. But it was still his.

Translation

He slowly turned toward the kitchen table, where he'd kept a pair of rusty pliers ready for months, like someone who already knew what was coming. He picked them up and weighed them. He looked at the visitor, who was waiting patiently in the doorway with the diamond in his open palm.

Translation

And then Marco did something strange: he smiled. A hollow, toothless, ironic smile. Because he had finally understood that everything he had earned had been paid for with himself, piece by piece.

Translation

Marco sat down at the table and placed his right hand on the wood. He placed his pinky between the jaws of the tongs.

Translation

“Just a moment,” he muttered, like someone about to pay the bill at the bar.

Strinse. Ci fu un rumore breve e secco. Marco fece una smorfia, ma non gridò. Aveva già fatto di peggio, negli anni.

Translation

He squeezed. There was a short, sharp sound. Marco grimaced, but didn't scream. He'd done worse over the years.

Translation

He picked up the small finger with two fingers of his left hand and offered it to the visitor, who accepted it with a grateful bow. Then he placed the diamond on the table, took off his hat for a moment, and disappeared into the night.

Translation

Marco wrapped his hand in a rag. He looked around: piles of money, jewelry, paintings, a diamond the size of an egg. And there he was, in the middle, no longer able to eat properly, walk, or even look at himself in the mirror.

Cominciò a ridere.

Translation

He began to laugh. A raucous, toothless laugh that hurt his chest but wouldn't stop. He laughed because he was truly rich. He laughed because he had won. He laughed because he had lost.

Translation

He sat down among the mountains of useless money, with his stump wrapped in a rag, and continued to laugh softly, while outside the window the night continued peacefully, like all the others.
