Translation

Leo was running in the rain, his backpack shifting on his back and feeling short of breath. When he reached the stop, he found only a bit of yellow light under the metal roof. The sound of a departing bus could be heard in the distance. He sat down on the plastic bench, put his hands on his knees and tried to breathe easy. The clock on the corner read twenty-three past eleven: the last bus had left only three minutes ago.

Translation

At that moment, the rain became heavier. It was not a gentle rain, but a downpour that hit the roof as if it was going to break it. In a few seconds, the water soaked the bench and his pants. Leo hugged himself to feel some warmth and inadvertently thought of Clara. She would have laughed at him for forgetting the umbrella again. That memory hurt him a lot, a pain he had known for a year, like a broken tooth that never quite heals.

Translation

He stood up and looked down the empty street. On the other side, between two old buildings he had never seen before, he found a narrow alley. At the end, he saw a warm, yellow light, which seemed strange for that hour. It looked like the light of a candle inside a jar of honey. Leo hesitated for a moment; he didn't remember that alley, which was strange because he had been using that bus stop for four years. But the rain was coming down hard and the cold was already in his bones. He ran across the street.

Translation

The wooden door opened with a soft ringing of bells. Leo walked in, and as soon as he closed the door, the noise of the storm disappeared, as if someone had taken the sound out of the world. The place smelled of freshly baked bread, rosemary and something sweet and old that he couldn't tell what it was. There were about six or seven tables with checkered tablecloths, and at each was a person eating slowly or staring at his plate blankly. No one looked at him when he entered.

Translation

Behind a shiny copper bar, a man in his fifties laid down a cloth and smiled. He had a gray beard, a flour-stained apron and brown eyes that seemed to know Leo, though he had never seen him.

Me llamo Mateo.

Translation

-You're just in time," said the man in a soft voice. Sit wherever you want. My name is Mateo.

Translation

Leo opened his mouth to explain that he was just looking for cover from the rain and would leave when it stopped. But the words didn't come out. The warmth of the place was creeping up his feet as if it was bringing him back to life. He chose a table by the window and sat down. Outside, through the fogged glass, the rain poured down regardless of time or place.

Translation

Mateo appeared at his side with a steaming plate that Leo hadn't ordered. It was a small portion of lasagna, browned on top, with that special smell of melted cheese and basil that Leo had been trying to forget for a year. His eyes filled with tears before he understood why.

Mi hermana hacía esto susurró.

Translation

-My sister used to do this," he whispered.

Translation

-I know," Mateo replied, and said no more.

Translation

Leo took a bite and suddenly he was no longer in the restaurant. He was in the small kitchen of his student apartment, two winters ago, with Clara standing on tiptoe in front of the oven. She wore the big apron tied twice around her waist and laughed because she had put in too much oregano. "You eat and shut up," she would say, handing him the plate. Leo blinked and the image disappeared, but a warm feeling lingered in his chest, like embers under the ash.

Translation

At the next table, an older man in a wrinkled suit raised his head. He had little white hair and his hands trembled slightly as he held the spoon.

Llevo no cuánto tiempo. Espero a Elena.

Translation

-The first time I cried too," he said, without introducing himself. I've been... I don't know how long. I'm waiting for Elena. She used to make a lentil soup that I could never learn to make. Mateo makes it the same way. -He smiled with a quiet sadness. You don't get old here, boy. Here you wait.

Translation

Andrew (for that is what Matthew called the man as he passed) returned to his plate as if he had never spoken. Leo looked around and, for the first time, saw what he had not wanted to see: all those faces had the same distant expression, the same arrested sweetness. And yet, instead of being frightened, he felt something dangerous: relief. Here she could stay. Here, Clara was just a mouthful away.

No dijo nada. No hacía falta.

Translation

Then he saw her. She was standing by the window, with her wavy blond hair falling over her shoulders and that crooked smile. Clara looked at him as if he had never left. She didn't say anything. She didn't need to. Leo pressed his fork into the palm of his hand.

No supo cuánto tiempo pasó. Ahora volvía a aparecer, y dolía.

Translation

He did not know how much time passed. He ate slowly, not finishing it all, and each bite brought back another image: Clara at eight, running him through the garden; Clara at seventeen, reading aloud to him the college acceptance letter; Clara in the hospital bed, too thin, squeezing his hand and saying "don't stop for me." That last part, the memory she had kept deep in the back of her mind until now. Now it was coming back, and it hurt.

Translation

Suddenly, Leo felt a change in the air. The steady sound of the rain against the glass had become irregular, softer. Outside, the rain was diminishing. Through the small opening of the slightly open door, a thin line of bluish-gray light came in: dawn was beginning to appear over the rooftops.

Translation

Mateo approached the table with two plates, one in each hand, and slowly placed them in front of Leo. On the left, a perfect lasagna, steaming, with the golden edge exactly as Clara made it. The smell was so identical that Leo had to close his eyes. On the right, a simple earthenware bowl with a clear, golden broth that hardly smelled of anything: onion, maybe, a little bay leaf.

Puedes quedarte a comerla. Puedes volver a comerla todas las noches, si quieres. Aquí el tiempo no pasa.

Translation

-This one," said Mateo, pointing to the lasagna, "is your sister's. Identical. You can stay and eat it. You can come back to eat it every night, if you want. Time doesn't pass here.

Translation

He paused. He put a finger next to the bowl of broth.

Translation

-And this is soup for the trip. It's simple. It doesn't taste like anything you remember. But it's warm enough to get you home.

Translation

Leo looked at the two plates. He looked at Clara, who was still by the window, clearer now, almost asking him for something. "Stay," her smile seemed to say. "We're fine here." Leo felt that word tugging hard, like a rope tied to his chest. If he stayed, he would have this forever: the smell of the cheese, her voice, the garden, the letter, her hand squeezing his. No more exams at three in the morning. No more waking up and remembering she was gone.

Translation

But then, without looking for it, the phrase came back, "Don't stop for me."

Translation

A tremor ran up his hands. He thought of Andres, of the decades he may have sat with his trembling spoon, waiting for an Elena who had already finished her own journey. He thought of his mother, who still left him voicemails on Sundays. He thought of all the mornings when he had remained alive almost by chance and realized, with a strong and painful clarity, that to stay there would not be to honor Clara. It would simply be to stop living without having the courage to die.

Translation

He looked up at the image of his sister. Clara was no longer smiling sadly; she nodded very slowly, as if giving permission. Leo took a deep breath, felt his chest open, and brought both hands to the clay bowl.

Translation

-Thank you," she said to the lasagna, her voice cracking slightly. Thank you for everything.

Translation

And he lifted the soup to his lips.

Translation

The broth was simple, yes, but it went down her throat with a strong warmth, like a hand on her back that says "keep going." As he drank, Clara's figure by the window became transparent, then glowing, until it disappeared in a ray of sunlight already streaming through the wide-open door. It wasn't a sad goodbye. It was more like when someone lets go of your hand because you can walk alone.

Translation

Leo set the empty bowl on the table. Matthew picked up the dishes leisurely and nodded a single nod, showing his silent approval, his brown eyes shining a little brighter than usual. Andrew was still sitting in his corner, still; not everyone chooses the same day to leave, and that, Leo understood, was fine too.

Translation

He stood up. His clothes, he noted with surprise, had dried. He reached for his wallet to pay, but Mateo shook his head.

Ya has pagado dijo—. Camina con cuidado.

Translation

-You have already paid," he said. Walk carefully.

Translation

Leo crossed the room, pushed open the door and stepped out into the alley. The air smelled of wet asphalt and bread from some nearby bakery beginning its work. Over the rooftops, the sky was filled with pink and orange colors. He turned to take one last look at the restaurant sign, but where the door should have been there was only an old brick wall with a puddle at his feet.

Translation

He smiled. It wasn't a big smile, nor was it entirely cheerful; it was that little smile you get when you finally understand something. He slung his backpack over his shoulder and started walking toward the bus stop. The first bus of the day would soon appear, and he, for the first time in a long time, was looking forward to getting on.
