Translation

Clara felt like time had stood still. Just one year had passed since she had said some harsh words and Sofia had left her life forever. Since that day, sadness accompanied her, as if it had painted her clothes, her eyes and her mood gray. That night, it rained non-stop, which reflected how her heart felt: guilty, and it seemed like it would never end.

Translation

Suddenly, her phone vibrated. It was a voice mail. The name on the screen, Sofia, made her heart skip a beat. With a twitching thumb, she waited a few seconds before listening to the audio. Sofia's voice, friendly and almost cheerful, rang through the room, as if no time had passed. "Hi, Clarita. I know this is weird. Please don't hang up. Look out the window in exactly thirty seconds. You'll see a bicyclist in a yellow raincoat and a bag of oranges will fall out of it. I promise."

Translation

Clara let out a sad laugh. What a bad joke, she thought, but her feet carried her unintentionally towards the window. She counted the seconds under her breath. At twenty-eight seconds, a person in a yellow raincoat appeared around the corner. After thirty seconds, the bag of oranges broke and the fruit fell to the wet ground, like little balls of light.

Translation

Clara covered her mouth with one hand, her breath fogging the glass. She ran back to the phone, her hands shaking as she listened to the rest of the message. "If you're listening to this, you know I'm telling the truth. Go to the place where we were throwing coins for our future together. Hurry up, Clarita. We have a whole night ahead of us."

Translation

Without wasting a moment, Clara grabbed her keys and hurried down the stairs, her sneakers clattering in the puddles. The Plaza de la Fuente Antigua was fifteen minutes away, but she ran as if it were only a few seconds, dodging umbrellas and crossing the streets without waiting for the traffic light. The rain drenched her brown hair in her face, but she didn't care. Sofia is alive, he thought. She's doing something amazing and she's here.

Translation

The square was empty, with the fountain spouting water non-stop. Clara immediately recognized the stone bench, the third one from the statue; there, when they were twenty-two years old, they had thrown coins, promising each other a friendship forever. She knelt down and, without hesitation, reached underneath, feeling a taped envelope, protected from the humidity.

Translation

She opened it quickly. Inside, a card with Sofia's slanted handwriting read: "To the alley where you told me about your father. Look for our song on the wall. The key is in the repeating part." Clara pressed the card to her chest. A mixture of surprise and hope rose in her throat. This couldn't be chance. This was magic, or fate. She stood up and, for the first time in a year, a smile graced her lips.

Translation

Shadow Alley was twenty minutes away, but Clara almost flew. The bohemian neighborhood slept under a soft orange light, and the graffiti on the walls seemed to stare at her. She found the exact corner - the one where, one early winter morning, she had told Sofia her most intimate secrets - and turned on the flashlight of her cell phone.

Translation

The wall was a canvas full of layers: old ads torn off, paintings on top of others, hearts with blurred names. Clara checked every inch with the light, without breathing. Then she saw it: written in black ink, a verse of the song they had sung many, many times in the car, with the windows down. "If time stood still here..." Underneath, a small arrow pointed to the ground, a crack between two bricks. Clara dug her fingers in, hurting her knuckles, and found a small rusty key, tied to a red thread.

Translation

He closed his fist around the cold metal. He felt the adrenaline rush through his body. The Hope Theater, he thought, needing no further clue. Of course. Where we met. That's where it would be. The night seemed to be on his side, as if the whole world was holding its breath. He began to walk toward the outskirts of the city, the key clenched in his hand, silently practicing the words he would say to her: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Translation

The Abandoned Esperanza Theater stood out in the grass, with the letters of the poster fallen and the glass broken. Clara stuck the key in the side lock - the artist's door they used as youngsters to enter without anyone seeing them at rehearsals - and the mechanism opened with a clear sound. She pushed the door. The smell of dust, old wood and wet velvet hit her like a very real memory.

Translation

-Sofia? -her voice bounced off the high ceiling. Sofia, it's me.

Translation

He advanced down the side aisle, then through the main hall filled with broken seats, until he reached the stage. Moonlight streamed in through a hole in the ceiling, drawing a silver circle right in the center of the floor. There, in the exact center of that light, was an envelope. Just an envelope. Thick, yellowish, with her name written in big letters: Clarita.

Translation

Clara stood motionless. Her heart, which had been beating non-stop all night, now felt far away. She walked up to the stage slowly, like someone approaching a wounded animal, and picked up the envelope. The date on the postmark, when he turned it over, chilled his blood: a year ago. Twelve months. Three hundred and sixty-five days. He sat on the edge of the stage, his legs dangling over the orchestra pit, and opened the letter.

"Clarita, si estás leyendo esto, primero: respira. Segundo: no, no soy adivina.

Translation

"Clarita, if you are reading this, first: breathe. Second: no, I am not a fortune teller. The cyclist in the yellow raincoat is Marcos, the son of the greengrocer, who passes by your street every Thursday at twenty past nine. I know because I accompanied you to buy oranges a thousand times. I paid a friend to break your bag tonight. I prepared all this -the square, the alley, the theater- a year ago, before I left the country. Because I know you, Clarita. I know you so well it's scary."

Translation

Clara's eyesight blurred, but she read on, the letter trembling in her hands.

"La discusión fue un error. Nunca me engañaste.

Translation

"The discussion was a mistake. You never fooled me. What you heard was misplaced conversation, and I was so tired I let you believe the worst. Because, forgive me, I needed to leave. I had been feeling for years that I didn't exist without you, and that you didn't exist without me, and that wasn't love, Clara, it was suffocation. I really needed to disappear. But I couldn't leave you thinking that you had lost me because of you. So I leave you this trail, a year later, so that you would come here, to where we started, and find this instead of finding me. I'm sorry for that. I love you. Be strong alone. Sofia."

No habría reconciliación.

Translation

The letter fell from her fingers. Clara folded in on herself on the empty stage, and the sound that came from her throat was not a cry, but a deep, animal-like whimper that had been held in her chest for a year. He had run all night following a ghost. She had believed in a magic that was only the ability of a woman who knew her too well. There would be no reconciliation. Sophia was on the other side of the world, and the only thing magical about the night was how well it had set her free.

No supo cuánto tiempo lloró.

Translation

He didn't know how long he cried. When she finally stood up, the sky, visible through the hole in the ceiling, had begun to change, from black to gray, from gray to a light blue. Clara picked up the letter from the floor and read it again, this time more slowly. She was no longer looking for Sofia between the lines; she was looking for herself.

Asfixia.

Translation

Suffocation. That word hurt him more than any other. But in that pain, she understood a truth: yes, she had called Sophia three times a day; yes, she had given up other friendships; yes, she had built much of her identity based on only one person, and then she had reproached that person for not being able to meet all her needs. She was not a traitor. Nor was she a victim. She was simply someone who had loved in an imperfect way, and who had been loved enough to say goodbye to with a year of preparation and a path of riddles.

Translation

He wiped his face with the sleeve of his sweatshirt. He folded the letter carefully and put it in his pocket, next to the rusty key. He stepped off the stage, crossed the empty room and stepped out into the fresh dawn air. The city was beginning to wake up in the distance, with its first lights coming on one by one, as if someone, very patiently, was placing stars upside down.

Clara comenzó a caminar hacia casa.

Translation

Clara started walking home. She was going no faster or slower than anyone else at that hour. Her eyes hurt, her legs were heavy and she felt a new emptiness in her chest: no longer the emptiness of guilt, but the emptiness of a space to be filled. She still didn't know what she would fill it with. For the first time in a year - perhaps for the first time in much longer - it seemed to him that not knowing was exactly what he needed.
