Emilio Ortiz adjusted his uniform tie. The Hotel Siniestro had yellow lights buzzing, and the air was thick, almost sticky. "There are three rules," Emilio said to himself, as if not to forget. "You don't go into room 8. You don't answer the phone after 2:13 in the morning. And no correcting the name of any guest." The manager had given him his first paycheck with an odd smile and had made it very clear.

Emilio just wanted the night to end, collect his money and leave. He thought it best not to ask any questions in such a dark place. But a shiver ran down his spine. The big clock, which was behind him, made a "tick" that sounded too loud. Then Emilio looked up the stairs and felt that something was there, up there, as if breathing.

The front door opened with a sad noise, and a woman entered. She looked very tired, her face was pale and her eyes showed a lot of pain. Her brown hair was loose and her coat, which was old and a bit torn, smelled musty. Emilio, trying to be professional, brought the book over to her to check in. "Good evening, ma'am. Your name, please?" She hesitated a moment and then said quietly, "Elena. Elena, please."

As she bent down to write her name, an antique silver locket fell from her neck. Emilio picked it up. On it, he saw engraved letters that read: "Clara". For a second, he wanted to ask something. But the manager's voice echoed in his head: "never correct a guest's name". He handed her back the locket without saying anything and handed her a rusty key. The woman, who was now "Elena," went up to room 14 without looking back. Her signature was shaky, almost impossible to read. Emilio stared at the name "Elena" in the book, feeling a gradually growing uneasiness.

Emilio's curiosity was very great. At half past one in the morning, he did something he had promised not to do: he left the counter. He climbed the stairs, his heart pounding, to the door of number 8. He pushed, and the door opened easily. The room had no furniture. On the far wall, there was a huge, broken mirror showing many, many pale faces, mouths open in silent screams. Beneath each face floated a golden plaque with a name on it. But these were not the names of the people in the mirror. They were false names. Emilio saw in one of the faces the green eyes of the woman in the old coat. "Elena," the nameplate said. But he knew, with a deep sadness, that her real name was Clara. And he knew, at that moment, that the hotel was not just a building. It was a trap that swallowed souls, taking away their true identity.

Emilio hurried down the stairs, his legs weak and his mouth dry. Just as he reached the last step, the clock in the lobby read 2:13 a.m. The lights flickered and went out. The lights flickered and went out. Out of the cracks in the walls came a dark shadow, like black oil, and it spread across the floor with a whisper of many voices laughing quietly. The antique phone on the counter began to ring, a high-pitched sound breaking the silence. Emilio gripped the counter. His instinct told him to run away, not to answer the phone, to remember the rules.

But the images in the mirror, of trapped faces and false names, filled his mind. He saw Clara behind the glass, as if she would disappear forever. He understood that if he saved himself at her expense, it would not be a real life, but that he himself would be just another victim. He picked up the telephone receiver. A choked voice, full of desperation, whispered, "Help me, help me, I don't remember who I am..." The shadow on the floor rose, forming a tall, faceless figure, leaning over him with a smell of dampness and old metal.

¡Clara, Clara, Clara!

-Clara! -shouted Emilio, his voice breaking with despair, "Your name is Clara! Clara, Clara, Clara!

The name echoed down the hall like the sound of something breaking. Upstairs, in room 14, a loud noise was heard. On the phone, the crying stopped. A deep silence filled the hotel. Then, the woman's voice, which was broken before, repeated, louder: "Clara... My name is Clara." The faceless shadow trembled. She backed up a step, then glared at Emilio angrily.

From the second floor, the loud bang of a door opening could be heard. Clara ran down the stairs, her coat flapping. The locket, now glowing, she held tightly in her hand like a talisman. Her eyes, once filled with pain, now shone with a new light. As she passed by Emilio, she looked at him. In that look, there was gratitude, fear and a kind of silent apology. She pushed open the revolving door and stepped out into the night. Outside, a dog barked, and a car passed in the distance. The outside world, normal and alien, went on its way.

The door swung one last time and stopped. Inside, the shadow closed over Emilio, like a cloth to cover a dead man. He felt a tug in his chest, like a thin, patient hook. His feet lifted off the floor: a little, a little more, a little more. The mirror in room 8, far and near at the same time, called out to him. He understood then that the manager had smiled that way because each new receptionist was one more guest for the hotel. The advance payment, the check-in. The three rules, the trap lock. Clara had needed someone to save her, and the hotel had made sure to pick the next one.

Emilio intentó gritar su propio nombre. "Emilio susurró—, Emilio Ortiz, me llamo…"

Emilio tried to shout his own name. "Emilio," he whispered, "Emilio Ortiz, my name is..." But he could already feel the letters parting from him, one by one, falling towards the golden plaque waiting for him in the broken mirror. Outside, dawn was slowly breaking. Inside, behind the now empty counter, the phone went silent again. He waited for the next night. It waited for the next tired young man who believed, as Emilio had believed, that it was enough not to ask questions.
